Lego Digital Designer
LEGO has become much more than a kids’ construction game and the most unpleasant item to step on. The Danish company is now reaching out far beyond just gaming: it’s making digital games, animated movies, children’s clothing, and, of course, a software simulator of its famous bricks construction game.Read More
Imagine yourself as a kid playing LEGO, with your creative projects, towers, machines, even towns that always lacked a piece or two. And now suddenly you have them all! All possible shapes and colors, an unlimited quantity. Imagined? Yes, that’s what LEGO Digital Designer is about.
The first idea is that it’s just a digital LEGO simulator, and it will help your kids play it without the necessity to buy more and more sets. But there’s much more to this app. Standard blocks are much more than just a LEGO thing so that it can help you in 3D modeling your environment. There are 25 groups of objects, with more variety within each of them. And each element is here in several colors. And if you’d like to create some LEGO-style object for your design projects or just for fun, here it is. See, it looks even easier than LEGO-inspired Minecraft!
Well, we have found some nuances in virtual 3D modeling. Real world physics sometimes doesn’t apply. We have created an unbalanced model that would have fallen immediately in real life. And while creating it (and on saving it), we didn’t see any warning about its instability in the real world. So we’d advice not to trust this application mindlessly.
The models can be saved as Microsoft BOM (bill of materials). If you intend to recreate them physically, you’ll have the complete list of pieces you need. Building Guide mode can help you in recreating complicated constructions, The native file format .lxf saves the model as 3D LDD file.
It may make even an adult user want to play Lego just to enjoy the process. There are a field and 3D models of LEGO elements, and they’re all available in different shapes and colors. Select the piece, drag it onto the field and position it as you like. The combined elements remain visible.
The application lacks translation into some languages.
First it seems a bit unusual that you have to click on an item (available in the list on the left) and only then drag it into the right place (it would be more logical to drag it immediately). Tools are available in an easy menu on top.
Combined controls use the mouse to position the element and keys to turn it the right way. You can zoom the model in and out with mouse wheel. Kids using this application will soon get used to its specific manner. Adults mastering it will as well, though it may take a bit longer.
Sometimes it wouldn’t open the .lxf file by double-clicking but opens it with no problem from within the application.

The application is only available for Windows and OS X Unfortunately, LEGO hasn’t even announced mobile versions of its application. We guess they can be transferred as effectively as it was with (oh, that comparison again) Minecraft. But LEGO has a different point of view.
Being among world’s most powerful brands, LEGO can afford to offer LEGO Digital Designer for free. But yes, you’re welcome to buy any of LEGO’s material items. It seems that the app aimed to let you create some models digitally and then purchase the blocks you need for that.
If you still like playing LEGO or want to share this joy with your children, this one is for you. Completely free, easy to master and equipped with an unlimited set of bricks, it looks like a kid’s dream, so download LEGO Digital Designer even if you’re not sure whether you’ll ever run it.Collapse
