Functionality 4,5/5

Avast Free Antivirus matches files on your computer with a continually updated database of malware signatures. Each file that slips through becomes a subject to behavioral monitoring, looking for telltale signs of malicious activity. When new malware is found on your PC, you can upload it to Avast’s servers for further analysis.

Avast also screens out rogue web pages and malicious email attachments, delivering a wide range of customization options for each feature. The program offers efficient system scans, which can be scheduled.

The Smart Scan feature looks for weak passwords, dodgy browser add-ons, network threats, compatibility problems, outdated software, and performance issues. However, you can't fix performance problems without subscribing to the company's Cleanup product for $39.99 per year.

Among other features, Avast Free Antivirus offers a secure web browser for banking and shopping, a password manager, and a game mode for interruption-free play.

Design 5/5

Avast has a bright interface, with lots of white, green and orange colors, though subsidiary windows can be darker. Although the main screen doesn’t display when the last scan took place, that’s under the surface. A green check mark shows the system is protected, and it turns to red “!” or “X” when action is required.

There is a Smart Scan button in the center of the main screen, but all the meat of Avast’s interface is higher in a row of top-level items: Scan, Tools, Passwords, and Store.

In the Scan section, you can choose among probes for malware, network threats, outdated software, and browser add-ons. The Tools section features upsell items such as Sandbox and Firewall, as well as SecureLine VPN service, which is trialware. There are also links to create Rescue Disk, obtain Remote Assistance and to an informative statistics section.

Usability 4,5/5

Avast performs well in the virus protection tests carried out by both SE Labs and AV-TEST, identifying 100% of malware. AV-Test detected only a single false positive in a set of more than a million tests, netting the product 6 out of 6 protection score.

Avast also was the best-performing free antivirus in SE Labs’ detection tests, protecting against 87% of malware in a live test environment which includes both general threats and targeted attacks.

Cross-platform use 5/5

Avast! Free Antivirus is compatible with Windows XP and later, Mac OS, and Linux.

In-app purchases

Avast is free to download, however, it offers various tools you can purchase to improve your protection. You can upgrade Avast to Pro version for $49,99 per year or Premier version for $79,99/year. Also, there are tools like Internet Security ($59,99/year), Secure Line VPN ($59,99/year), Cleanup ($39,99/year), Passwords ($19,99/year) and more.

Conclusion

Avast Free Antivirus goes beyond the expectation from a free program by providing a fast and effective performance. It has a barely noticeable system impact and lets you make changes to how it operates.

Although Avast takes a long time to fully scan a system, it offers a great malware protection. It’s also good for those who want some free extra features.
